This table outlines the results of answers to four questions relating to the security of personal information collected by federal government web sites. The results are for audits of federal government web sites conducted during 2001, for federal government web sites audited only during 2001 and for government web sites audited during 2000 and again during 2001.

Question 1: Does the site collect personal information (PI)?

Of the 250 web sites audited during 2001, 119 (47.6 percent) complied.

Of the 125 web sites audited only during 2001, 50 (40 percent) complied.

Of the 125 web sites audited during 2000 and again during 2001, 69 (55.2 percent) complied.

Question 2: Provide warning re transmitting data across the Internet?

Of the 250 web sites audited during 2001, 54 (21.6 percent) complied.

Of the 125 web sites audited only during 2001, 25 (20 percent) complied.

Of the 125 web sites audited during 2000 and again during 2001, 29 (23.2 percent) complied.

Question 3: Provide online purchasing?

Of the 250 web sites audited during 2001, 9 (3.6 percent) complied.

Of the 125 web sites audited only during 2001, 3 (2.4 percent) complied.

Of the 125 web sites audited during 2000 and again during 2001, 6 (4.8 percent) complied.

Question 4: Provide secure facilities for transmission of payment data?

Of the 250 web sites audited during 2001, 7 (2.8 percent) complied.

Of the 125 web sites audited only during 2001, 2 (1.6 percent) complied.

Of the 125 web sites audited during 2000 and again during 2001, 5 (4 percent) complied.
