28 August 2006

Australian Privacy Commissioner, Ms Karen Curtis, announces the launch of Privacy Awareness Week (27 August to 2 September 2006).

"My Office along with Privacy NSW, Privacy Victoria and the Northern Territory Information Commissioner are jointly promoting Privacy Awareness Week," said Ms Curtis.

"It is the first time that our Offices have combined our efforts to take the privacy message across Australia.

"Privacy is an important issue that affects all Australians and our Offices are keen to increase awareness amongst business, government and individuals.

"Don't leave privacy to chance! Is the theme for the week and our Offices are encouraging business, government and individuals to take steps to protect personal information.

"On Tuesday 29 August the Attorney-General, the Hon Philip Ruddock MP, will release two important documents for the Office; our Privacy Impact Assessment Guide and Layered Privacy Policy," said Ms Curtis.

Privacy Awareness Week first began in Victoria in 2001.

"We aim to hold Privacy Awareness Week each year, and hope that our international regional colleagues will also be part of Privacy Awareness Week in the future," said Ms Curtis.

Each Office will be undertaking activities throughout the week. For further information please visit the following websites:
