Dear Committee Secretary
Inquiry into the Territories Law Reform Bill 2010
The Territories Law Reform Bill 2010 (the Bill) proposes that Norfolk Island public sector agencies be required to adhere to the Information Privacy Principles contained in section 14 of the Privacy Act 1988 (the Privacy Act).I note that the Privacy Act already applies to private sector organisations, as defined in section 6C of the Privacy Act.
MyOffice has been consulted in the development and drafting of the Billand has provided input into specific provisions of the Bill through that process. My Office believes the current provisions of the Bill appropriately reflect the intent of the legislation.
Please note that my Office will be resourced to provide assistance to Norfolk Island public sector agencies in ensuring their information management practices align with the requirements of the Privacy Act and to take action to resolve any complaints.
Yours sincerely
Karen Curtis
