Media Release: National Principles for the Fair Handling of Personal Information (revised edition, January 1999)

January 1999

The Privacy Commissioner has released a revised version of the The National Principles for the Fair Handling of Personal Information , originally issued in February 1998. The Commissioner noted then that they would need to be reviewed within six to twelve months in the light of discussions on implementation and in response to any issues which arose in practice; in particular it would be necessary to review the principles relating to law enforcement functions. Those reviews have now been completed and a number of amendments made. The law enforcement provisions have been made more specific. A small number of changes have been made to bring the principles more closely into line with the European Union''s data protection framework. Other minor changes have been introduced to clarify the meaning of particular provisions.
