Media Release: Human Rights Commission welcomes appointment of new Privacy Commissioner

Professor Alice Tay, President of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, today (31 March 1999) welcomed the appointment of Malcolm Crompton as the new Federal Privacy Commissioner.
"I am delighted to hear of Mr Crompton's appointment and I extend to him a warm welcome," Professor Tay said.
"Mr Crompton brings with him extensive public and private sector management experience, which will greatly benefit the Commission in its continuing involvement with the establishment of a privacy regime for the private sector. He takes up his appointment on April 20 and I look forward to working with him," Professor Tay said.
Between 1996-99, Mr Crompton was AMP's Manager of Government Affairs in Canberra, representing the organisation in its relations with Government. While at AMP, he was involved with the strategic management of major public policy issues including: AMP's response to the Corporate Law Economic Reform Program; legislation to introduce choice of superannuation fund; and the impact of regulation on electronic commerce.
Mr Crompton has also had a distinguished career in the Department of Finance, with management roles in: Employment; Expenditure; Social Security; Retirement Benefits; and Transport and Industry.
He holds a Bachelor of Economics and a Bachelor of Science.
