Site Changes

On 1 November 2010 the Office of the Privacy Commissioner was integrated into the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and a new website established at www.oaic.gov.au.

Media Release: Rewards for good privacy - launch of inaugural Australian Privacy Awards and Australian Privacy Medal

The Australian Privacy Commissioner, Karen Curtis, has called on businesses, community organisations and government agencies to enter the inaugural Australian Privacy Awards 2008, and for individuals who have shown outstanding commitment in the field of privacy to be nominated for the Australian Privacy Medal 2008.

"Organisations' good privacy practices, systems and projects demonstrate that our society is one that is generally committed to protecting and respecting people's privacy," Ms Curtis said.

"In order to recognise and reward organisations for their positive contribution to privacy, I urge businesses, community bodies and government agencies to enter the Australian Privacy Awards program."

The Australian Privacy Awards and Australian Privacy Medal were launched today by Senator the Hon John Faulkner, Special Minister of State and Cabinet Secretary.

The Awards are in four categories:

Large Business Award - for businesses with 100+ employees.
Microsoft Small-medium Business Award - for businesses with less than 100 employees.
Community and NGO Award - for not-for-profit organisations, such as charities, NGOs, industry bodies, advocacy organisations, and social, cultural, sporting or community groups.
Symantec Government Award - for any government agency at a local, state or national level.

A Grand Award will be presented to the most outstanding entrant.

The Australian Privacy Medal is open to any individual who has exhibited an outstanding level of achievement in advancing privacy in Australia.

The deadline for nominations for the Awards and Medal is 9 July 2008. The presentation to winners will take place at a gala dinner on 27 August 2008.
