Media Release: Privacy Commissioner approves variation to Market and Social Research Privacy Code
6 July 2007
The Privacy Commissioner, Karen Curtis, has given her approval to vary the Market and Social Research Privacy Code (the ''Code') under section 18BD of the Privacy Act 1988.
"The variation to the Code reflects industry changes, as well as the changes to the Privacy Actsince the Code was initially approved in September 2003," Ms Curtis said.
The Code covers market and social research companies who are members of the Association of Market and Social Research Organisations (AMSRO).
The Code includes privacy standards that are at least equivalent to the National Privacy Principles enshrined in the Privacy Act, and in some cases are higher. It has higher standards for notifying research participants about why their information is being collected and how it will be used and disclosed. It also gives individuals the choice of having their information de-identified, destroyed or deleted at the completion of the research project.
The Privacy Commissioner will continue to handle complaints in relation to the Code.
"I commend the Code Review Panel and AMSRO for the extensive Code review they completed earlier this year and for continuing to strive for privacy best practice in their professional services," Ms Curtis said.
