Media Release: Company Director's Guide to Enhance Privacy

7/5/04

"The company director's guide to privacy, launched today, will assist directors to oversee the implementation of efficient and responsible privacy procedures that have the potential to enhance customer trust and loyalty," said Acting Federal Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim.

"A Guide for Directors - Privacy and Boards: What You Don't Know Can Hurt You demonstrates how good privacy procedures are not only an essential part of an organisation's risk management strategy, but are an integral part of good customer relations.

"The Guide is designed to help directors oversee a responsive organisation that engages with community concerns about privacy.

"There is a growing awareness amongst directors that good privacy practices add value to businesses by encouraging a more positive image with the community.

"The Guide answers a number of fundamental questions which directors are asking such as, what are the National Privacy Principles? What are the risks of failing to address privacy? What is the business case for sound privacy practices? What do directors need to do?

"I believe that this Guide will become an indispensable part of Australian company directors' informational tool kits.

"I thank the Australian Institute of Company Directors who worked jointly with our Office to adapt a similar Canadian manual by Dr Ann Cavoukian of the Information and Privacy Commissioner/Ontario and Professor Richard Le Blanc to the Australian business environment," said Mr Pilgrim.

The Guide is available in hardcopy from the Australian Institute of Company Directors. An electronic copy is available at http://www.privacy.gov.au/materials/types/download/8812/6611
