Media Release: Federal Privacy Commissioner farewells NSW Privacy Commissioner

16 may 2003

The Federal Privacy Commissioner, Malcolm Crompton, today acknowledged the contribution made by Chris Puplick as New South Wales Privacy Commissioner. Mr Puplick is resigning as NSW Privacy Commissioner today.

"Mr Puplick has worked hard to help build privacy protections for NSW citizens, and has made significant contributions to the national and international debate on privacy issues since he commenced his formal involvement in this area as a member of the NSW Privacy Committee in 1992 and then as NSW's first Privacy Commissioner, since 1999", said Mr Crompton

Mr Crompton noted "The debate around privacy is not black and white, as many commentators would like. It is about achieving an important balance between the rights of the individual and the needs of the broader society. Chris has been a strong advocate for the community's right to privacy, and has not stepped away from speaking out to ensure all members of the community are aware of their rights."

"I wish Mr Puplick all the best in his future endeavours", said Mr Crompton.
