Media Release: A New Era for the Office of the Privacy Commissioner

Media Release

A New Era for the Office of the Privacy Commissioner

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner will separate from the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) from 1 July 2000.

A member of HREOC since 1989, the separation of the privacy office will provide an opportunity to build on the human rights framework and promote an Australian culture that respects privacy.

Marking the occasion, Privacy Commissioner Malcolm Crompton, thanked the Commissioners and staff of HREOC. He said "it is important to acknowledge that the relationship between the agencies provides an excellent platform for the future."

"Separation is a time to reflect on the generous contribution and commitment to promoting the fundamental human right of privacy that has been made over the years by all the Commissioners and staff of HREOC," Mr Crompton said.

"We appreciate this inheritance and will continue to work with the community, Commonwealth agencies and the private sector to develop and implement a respected and valued culture of privacy in Australia."
