Media Release: Federal Privacy Commissioner, Malcolm Crompton comments on ABN debate

Federal Privacy Commissioner, Malcolm Crompton comments on ABN debate
Media reports that I am currently conducting an investigation into the sale of details associated with the Australian Business Numbers (ABNs) are incorrect.
My Office has been holding discussions with the Australian Taxation Office on this issue to discuss any potential privacy implications. I am keen for these discussions to continue as I want to be fully across all the details in the proposal before I take further action or make further comments.
The concerns raised by media reports about the ABN demonstrate how sensitive individuals are about the use of their personal information. Parliament is currently considering a Bill to extend the Privacy Act to the private sector-which aims to give all individuals greater control over their personal information.
I urge all Australians to contribute to the debate over the legislation, including the proposed exemptions, so that we achieve a balance that works for all of us.
