Media Release: Federal Privacy Commissioner's future direction
30/3/2000
"Technology doesn't have to be pitted against privacy, said Federal Privacy Commissioner, Malcolm Crompton during the launch of his Office's strategic plan, today.
"Australians have taken up new technologies, like mobile phones and the Internet, with great enthusiasm and we appreciate the benefits they offer. However, new technologies enable our buying habits, entertainment preferences and aspects of our personal lives to be tracked and sold onto interested organisations," he said.
"Many studies show that consumers are worried about the privacy downsides of new technologies. Taking advantage of new technology while maintaining the privacy we want will involve a mix of approaches including: market forces, legislation, consumer education and privacy enhancing technology."
"Our strategic plan will help consumers enhance their privacy while making full use of new technologies," Mr Crompton said.
"Our purpose, as outlined in the plan, is to promote an Australian culture that respects privacy and to ensure that all Australian's have real choices in deciding how much personal information they give organisations. These choices must also be supported by redress mechanisms in case consumer expectations are not met.
"As part of our plan we will ensure that we can respond to consumer privacy demands, will continue to work with federal government agencies to enhance individuals privacy and be ready and prepared to implement new privacy legislation.
"Our key result areas will be:
- A well established network of people and organisations ready to support implementation of privacy solutions.
- A comprehensive understanding of current community perceptions of privacy.
- Strategic themes reflected in everyone's job and role.
- Office of the Privacy Commissioner ready and prepared to implement new legislation
"I look forward to working with consumers, business and government to establish privacy solutions that build confidence throughout the Australian community," said Mr Crompton.
