Media Release: Privacy Commissioner welcomes ALRC review into the Privacy Act
31 January 2006
Privacy Commissioner, Karen Curtis, has welcomed the Attorney General's announcement that the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) will conduct a review of the Privacy Act.
"The Attorney-General's announcement is a further positive step towards ensuring that Australia's privacy laws deliver to Australians the most appropriate level of privacy protection in the 21st century," Ms Curtis said.
"My Office completed a review of the Private Sector Provisions of the Privacy Act last year and the first recommendation was that the Attorney-General consider a broader review of privacy in Australia.
"I am pleased that the Attorney General has taken up this recommendation.
"The ALRC is well placed to conduct this review and I look forward to working with the ALRC as it examines the varied issues affecting the privacy of all Australians," said Ms Curtis.
