Privacy Impact Assessment Guide

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner released the Privacy Impact Assessment Guide (the PIA Guide) on 29 August 2006.

A draft version of the PIA Guide was released for consultation in December 2004. The new version of the Guide takes into account many of the comments and suggestions that the Office received since that time. The Office thanks all those who contributed to this consultation.

The Office encourages all agencies to use the PIA Guide as an integral part of the development of any projects which involve the handling of personal information.

Layered Privacy Policy

The Office also released a new 'layered notice format' Privacy Policy on 29 August 2006.

The Policy is intended to serve as model for other agencies and organisations. Research has shown that individuals find privacy notices long and difficult to read and most do not read them at all. Layered notices are an effective means of communicating the personal information handling practices of an agency or organisation.

The Office's condensed Policy is easy to understand, using clear simple language and includes the most important information that individuals need and want to know about the Office's personal information handling practices. Should individuals want further information the condensed notice links to the Office's full privacy policy, which addresses the Office's legal requirements.
