Site Changes

On 1 November 2010 the Office of the Privacy Commissioner was integrated into the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC). An interim website for the OAIC is available at www.oaic.gov.au. This site (privacy.gov.au), which only contains information related to the OAIC's privacy function, will be maintained until a combined site is established.

Privacy and my agency

Personal information is essential for many agencies. This is because a large number of government transactions rely on the use of personal information of individuals.

Government agencies are expected to set high standards for information handling. This is because, unlike other sectors such as the private sector, individuals may not have alternatives if they are unhappy with the service they receive. That's why it's important that you handle personal information with care and that your agency moves quickly to rectify any privacy problems.

The Privacy Act sets out rules about information handling, including how your agency may collect, use, store and disclose personal information. To find out if your agency needs to comply go to Do we need to comply?
