ASSIGNMENT OF DUTIES
TITLE: Policy Adviser
CLASSIFICATION: APS Level 6

LOCATION: Canberra and Sydney
SUPERVISOR: Deputy Director, Policy
DUTIES:
Under limited direction:
- 1. Provide written and oral advice within the Office, including to the Privacy Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner, on the application of the Privacy Act 1988 and on general privacy matters.
- 2. Provide written and oral advice on the application of the Privacy Act 1988 and on general privacy matters to key external stakeholders from the public and private sectors.
- 3. Analyse, advise on and monitor legislative, policy, technological and other relevant developments in privacy and personal information handling practice in the public and private sectors.
- 4. Draft complex correspondence, reports, submission, speeches, statutory instruments, guidelines and material for publication.
- 5. Undertake policy research and projects in consultation with external organisations.
- 6. Prepare for, and participate in, meetings, workshops, seminars with internal and external stakeholders relating to privacy issues.
- 7. Other relevant tasks as directed
These duties are to be performed in accordance with the APS Code of Conduct and APS Values and Office policies, including Workplace Diversity and Occupational Health and Safety. Under section 25 of the Public Service Act 1999 the Office may determine the duties of an employee from time to time.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
- 1. Well developed analytical skills, including in relation to policy and legislation.
- 2. Demonstrated experience in researching, developing, drafting, consulting upon and evaluating legislative, policy or guidance material.
- 3. High-level written communication skills, including the ability to write clear, concise documents including complex advice correspondence, issues and briefing papers, reports and submissions.
- 4. Well developed liaison, negotiation and oral communication skills.
- 5. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team, as well as individually.
Desirable:
- 6. Relevant knowledge or understanding of privacy policy issues in the Australian context
- 7. Tertiary qualifications in law, social sciences or the humanities.
Note that the successful candidate will be required to undergo a security assessment.
